Iranian Teen Charged With Murdering Her Rapist Case Over

If you’ve been reading the site, you will know that I have been very interested in the story of an Iranian teenager who was sentenced to death for killing a man when he tried to rape her. Thankfully the case has come to an almost acceptable end.

Nazanin will not be executed and will serve no additional prison time but she will have to pay “Dieh” (Blood money) to the family of the victim to the tune of 260 million Iranian riyals (aprx $30,600 USD)

All things considered this is a great outcome, but not perfect. You can read more about Nazanin and her plight and also make donations to help cover the Dieh and legal fees at this website.

I do fear that the only reason the outcome was reached was due to the fact that the case received quite a large amount of public interest. Many other similar cases go unheard of, but at least it’s a step in the right direction for human rights.

I’m still finding it hard to comprehend why these sorts of ultra-conservative religious-based laws are still in existence.
