Luck Is Probability Taken Personally

Penn Jillette said “Luck is probability taken personally”.. Well actually it was Chip Denman that said it.. but whatever. That statement is so interesting, particularly because of how accurate it really is.
People rely on this mystical force called “luck” to help them through life and its generally a pretty harmless thing to do, well unless you’re into gambling. But I do find amusing the sorts of lengths people go to in order to improve their luck.
Luck is defined as something that happens beyond a person’s control, and comes in the forms of “good luck” and “bad luck”. While it generally has superstitious connotations, sensible people can use the word to describe a coincidental event.
But did you know that U-shaped pieces of steel can bring good fortune? How about a rabbits foot or a four leaf clover.. Don’t leave home without them!
But make sure not to break mirrors, spill salt, open an umbrella indoors, walk under a ladder, step on a crack, kill a ladybug, cut your nails at night, put a hat on a bed, put a shoe on a table, and for gods sake make sure you don’t cross the path of a black cat! (unless you’re in parts of Europe where this is considered good luck!) And if you mention something bad that might happen, make sure to knock on wood so that it doesn’t become a reality!
I consider myself to have extremely good luck (not in the mystical sense) and I go out of my way to walk in front of black cats and step under ladders, but that’s just because I’m a patronizing bastard. At the end of the day it’s all fun and games, but I have to admit that I did think less of a woman at work who would not walk past me on the stairs because of the bad luck that would come from doing so.
Good luck!
