When Barack Obama speaks, his critics are more bothered by the enthusiasm of his crowds than the meaning of his words. They see the soaring of his rhetoric as proof that his claims are baseless. They attack him on lack of experience and try to confuse his patriotism, and think that white voters only support him out of guilt. But what they don’t understand is that through a deft combination of pragmatism, wisdom and powerful oratory with an ability to inspire even the apathetic, Obama offers Americans a path to reclaiming the soul of our national greatness in a way no other candidate running can. That is why we are enthusiastic. Read more
Atheists Less Trusted Than Crazy People

According to this recent Gallop Poll, more people would vote for a Mormon for president than would vote for an atheist. To say nothing about the absurdity of the Mormon religion, I wish this finding were surprising. And I wish that it mattered. I cannot see a time in the near future that we will have any politician, at least in the national arena, openly admitting to not believing in God.

As if it were in question, Newsweek via MSNBC.com is reporting that “[M]ore than half the country (58 percent) say they wish the Bush presidency were simply over, a sentiment that is almost unanimous among Democrats (86 percent), and is shared by a clear majority (59 percent) of independents and even one in five (21 percent) Republicans.” Um, yeah, no shit. Sure, watching untalented douchebags prove just how douchey they really are is about as fantastic as television entertainment gets these days. But as TVWeek.com reported, “Coverage of the president’s State of the Union Address blanketed the 9 p.m. hour among all the major networks, while “American Idol” at 8 p.m. earned a higher rating than all four network airings of the Address combined.” Read more

According to this report by PrisonPlanet.com, President Bush lied to the American People during Tuesday night’s State of the Union speach, stating that “We stopped an al Qaeda plot to fly a hijacked airplane into the tallest building on the West Coast,” a claim already proven false by pretty much everybody. The arrogant stubbornness (Is there any other kind?) of the Vice President Continues to amaze me daily. As CBSNews.com reports, Cheney offered up the first White House response to this week’s Senate resolution deriding the Presidents planned escalation ”augmentation” of troop levels in Iraq by more than 21,000. Finally, someone (Keith Olberman) has the gumption to call FOX out for what it really is: Illegitimate propaganda. Not that that is going to do anything, since Fox will fire right back with the same discrediting doublespeak they’re famous (and popular) for, but at least he’s said what we’ve all been thinking, you know, on TV.

After you recover from the resulting hangover from last night’s SOTU (Do we really need an acronym for this? Jesus, we’re lazy.) drinking game last night, do two things: Read The New York Times‘ State of the Union editorial, it’s the only review you’ll need, and then focus all your attention on this, the rapidly unfolding trial of Vice President Dick Cheney’s former advisor, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

If you were following the case of the Iranian girl sentenced to death for killing her rapist then you will be pleased to here that she has been spared the death penalty after a panel of judges decided that she had not committed intentional murder. What remains to be seen now is what her new punishment will be, unfortunately I cannot see her getting off too lightly. Read more
