According to MIT’s Technology Review, “216 million Americans are scientifically illiterate.” By “illiterate,” they mean that more than half the population of the U.S. “cannot read a simple story in, say, Technology Review or the New York Times science section and understand even the basics of DNA or microchips or global warming.” Read more

French schools and universities have begun receiving copies of a Turkish propaganda book entitled “The Atlas Of Creation” which quotes from the Koran and states that humans did not evolve but rather that they were created.
It also states that theories of Charles Darwin are “the true source of terrorism”.

According to this report by wftv.com, because of a flawed legal policy, a 21-year-old woman was held for two days in jail after reporting being raped. To top it off, the woman was denied the morning after pill to prevent pregnancy because a “jail worker later refused to give her a second dose [of the morning after pill]…because of religious convictions.” Read more

Penn Jillette said “Luck is probability taken personally”.. Well actually it was Chip Denman that said it.. but whatever. That statement is so interesting, particularly because of how accurate it really is.
People rely on this mystical force called “luck” to help them through life and its generally a pretty harmless thing to do, well unless you’re into gambling. But I do find amusing the sorts of lengths people go to in order to improve their luck. Read more

The arrogant stubbornness (Is there any other kind?) of the Vice President Continues to amaze me daily. As CBSNews.com reports, Cheney offered up the first White House response to this week’s Senate resolution deriding the Presidents planned escalation ”augmentation” of troop levels in Iraq by more than 21,000. Once again, the fires of the “culture war” between religious watchdogs and “Hollywood” (aka “movies”) are being fanned simply for the sake of getting pissed off. As Playfuls.com reports, The Catholic League has requested an investigation into whether or not the independent film “Houndog,” which recently premiered at the Sundance film festival, has broken any child pornography laws. Finally, someone (Keith Olberman) has the gumption to call FOX out for what it really is: Illegitimate propaganda. Not that that is going to do anything, since Fox will fire right back with the same discrediting doublespeak they’re famous (and popular) for, but at least he’s said what we’ve all been thinking, you know, on TV.

Um, nothing much to say about this except, remember how I said (above post), let’s hope “the next few years are merely lackluster rather than hellish?” Well, I have a feeling I know which one it’s going to be.
Germany Says No To Scientology

The scientologists are trying to set up shop in Germany but have come under very heavy criticism by the German government and its citizens. They have stated that the organization is merely hiding under the guise of a religion in order to exploit money from people by brainwashing them.
Finally a country that gets it! If only the US would wake up to the scheming nature of scientology and remove their tax exempt status. It was founded by a bad science fiction writer who has stated that the best way to make money is to start a religion for fucks sake!
At least it’s one more nail in the coffin.
What Are Those Crazy Scientologists Up To Now?

The “Industry of Death” exhibit is sponsored by the Church of Scientology and makes a host of outrageous claims about the field of psychiatry. Twenty-five percent of psychiatrists sexually abuse their patients. Psychiatrists deliberately kill about 10,000 people a year - sounds about right. And for the big surprise, psychiatrists were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks - guilty by association, at least, since psychiatrists are responsible for the existence of terrorists and suicide bombers.
And this is being held in the Columbia Capitol Rotunda.. Who authorized that? Damn those scientologists have a knack for persuading people into doing really crazy stuff.
On an interesting and disturbing side note, the word “Scientology” is in my spell checker. I didn’t realize we could make up words and have them added to the dictionary! How come “Skepathetarian” isn’t in there?
